How it happened

Lookout, founded in San Francisco in 2007 by John Hering, Kevin Mahaffey and James Burgess, built mobile-security software and crossed a $1B valuation on a $150M Series F led by T. Rowe Price in 2014.

As enterprise security consolidated into cloud suites, standalone mobile protection lost ground; Lookout sold its consumer business to F-Secure in 2023 and refocused on enterprise customers. Its remaining equity has been marked down in SEC filings: the Private Shares Fund carries Lookout common at about $10.81 a share in 2022 falling to roughly $4.03 by mid-2026, around 63 percent lower, implying a value near $380M.

Glassdoor reviews over the years cited management turnover, technical debt and stalled career growth, with some recent reviewers describing a company that had lost momentum.
